Adelaide R. Thorpe Scholarship Recipient

Rhonda Sexton, the first recipient of the Adelaide R. Thorpe Scholarship Fund, recently graduated from Brazosport College. The scholarship fund was founded in 2007 by Brazosport Health Foundation as a tribute to Adelaide Thorpe in honor of her unprecedented dedication to Brazosport Regional Health System.
During the May 12 Pinning Ceremony at Brazosport College, Sexton expressed her appreciation to the Board of Directors at Brazosport Health Foundation. The scholarship fund is designed to help remove financial barriers for nursing students with demonstrated academic ability and a desire to care for those who are injured or ill. Sexton received $2,500 per semester for two years to help with tuition and book fees.
“Everyone at Brazosport Regional has made it so easy for me. The team has been extremely friendly and very welcoming,” stated Sexton. “I was inspired to pursue nursing after my mom had an extended hospital stay. To see the nurses’ direct impact on her overall outlook was comforting. I hope to have the same impact on patients by making a difficult situation more bearable.”
While attending Brazosport College, Sexton was on the Dean’s List each semester and completed her preceptorship in Emergency Services at Brazosport Regional. After she completes her Texas Board of Nursing exam, Sexton plans to continue to work as a registered nurse at Brazosport Regional.
“Nurses are the heart of any hospital and we need many more them,” stated Mrs. Thorpe. “This scholarship is so very important to me because of my late husband, Vincent, and I both had scholarships to attend college.”
