Creates New Autism Support Group

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 150 children were diagnosed with autism in 2007. In fact, 67 children are diagnosed each day. Brazosport Regional Health System recently created a new autism support group to help family and friends with loved ones who have autism.

As the fastest-growing development disorder, autism is detected in early childhood and can last a lifetime. Autism interferes with the child’s ability to communicate and relate to others. Signs of autism included: no eye-contact, repetitive speech, and body gestures to illustrate emotions.

Although there is no cure for autism, there is a wide variety of treatment options available. It is best for the child to begin treatment at the earliest stage of autism, however while some treatment options can lead to great improvement, others can have little effect. Treatment options that may control symptoms are behavioral and communication therapies as well as certain medications. Plus, educating yourself about the disorder and having support from others can help your child’s prognosis.

This month, the support group will feature Deputy PJ Trotta. He will speak about the importance of child safety as well as hand out emergency kits to each attendee. The kits will include important documents that every parent should have and fingerprint forms in case your child disappears.

The first autism support group meeting will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2008 from 6:00pm-7:00pm at BRHS in the classrooms. For more information about the support group, please call Emelda Moreno at 979-319-0232.
