Kelly Gale Amen
Kelly Gale Amen, a native of Weatherford, Oklahoma, graduated with a Bachelors degree from the University of Oklahoma. Shortly after moving to Houston in 1972, he began his professional design career by opening KGA Inc. where he has been an influential participant in the Houston arts & design community for decades.
Kelly’s work has been featured in all available media, from a feature on HGTV’s Extreme Homes to frequent highlights and features on his design projects in the local print press. Kelly’s signature products lie in his ability to create Art Furniture to give voice to his own personal vision. Kelly’s art furniture is proudly displayed at Houston’s Shady Groves Victims Memorial, Houston’s Bob Lanier Public Works Building, Houston Museum of Natural Science, The Thomas P. Stafford Air and Space Center in Weatherford Oklahoma, and the National Route 66 Museum in Elk City, Oklahoma.
Kelly has also supported multiple charitable ventures throughout his career including The Texas Children’s Cancer Center, Houston Aids Foundation, Zina Garrison Foundation, Susan G. Koman for the Cure, The Stafford Air and Space Museum and the Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing Organization. With his activities ranging through tireless support of the arts to active participation as a creator of Art Furniture and sculpture, Kelly enjoys a reputation internationally for cutting edge concept and design.
Kelly’s art furniture first entered the community when Brazosport resident and two time breast cancer survivor, Cathy Tiner, bought the Susan G. Komen for the CureŽ Honoring the Promise Collection Bench at a Houston auction and then donated to the Cancer Center at Brazosport Regional Health System.
Now, Kelly has gone the extra mile and created a bench in honor of The Mermaid Project. As the only one of its kind, The Mermaid Project provides free breast cancer screening, diagnostics, and treatment for qualifying low-income, uninsured people living in our community.
The bench will travel around the Brazosport area until June 24. On June 25, the bench will be transported to the Bluebonnet Social Club’s premier event where it will be auctioned off to one lucky winner. We hope this bench will represent breast cancer awareness and the importance of screening for both men and women.
Accompanied with the bench, the Bluebonnet Truck has been traveling through Brazoria County to create awareness for the upcoming Bluebonnet Social Club. The 1982 Silverado was on the farm of Noble and Rachel Amen and given to Kelly Gale Amen to be painted by Barbara Jones. As a leader of the Houston Art Community and an inspiration for other Kelly Gale Amen designs, the late Barbara Jones was part of the creation of the Bluebonnet Truck, Bluebonnet Pillows and Bluebonnet Box for Araya Chocolates.
Since the induction of the nationally renowned Art Car Parade in April of 1988, the 1982 Chevy “Bluebonnet” Silverado has been apart of the once 40 car parade 12 of the 22 years of parade celebration. The Art Car Parade now attracts 250+ vehicles from 23 states along with Canada and Mexico and has a live audience of approximately 250,000.
Now that this year’s art car parade is over, the Bluebonnet Truck is now officially retired and will appear in the Brazosport area before finding a new home at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, TX. The Bluebonnet truck will be displayed at The Bluebonnet Social Club on June 25 at the RiverPlace in Freeport.
The pictured Bluebonnet pillow is one of the signature pillows from the Kelly Gale Amen pillow collection. The first of this pillow style was completed in 1982 and profiled in the Texas Home Magazine. With the embrace of the Bluebonnet Truck, the Bluebonnet Pillow became a reality and a limited collection of 100 pillows were created in pairs of 2, making a series of 50 for purchase.
The fabrics of the pillows were designed through silk screens and the “wildflower” pattern included 17 screens, the Texas inset having 5 screens. The profile for the Texas wildflower fabric was artwork from the late Barbara Jones and the profile for the Texas inset was graphic work from the late Anne Abernathy. Now 20 years old and the last pair of pillows, the Bluebonnet pillows are donated from a private collection and will be auctioned at the Bluebonnet Social Club to raise funds for Brazosport Regional Health System.
In addition to the truck and pillows, Kelly Gale Amen has help to establish a relationship with Araya Chocolates. Araya delivers an exceptional gastronomic experience in each of its chocolate creations using only premium chocolate, cream, natural fruits and nuts, infusions, vanilla, honey and liquor. The taste of the chocolate candies will be available to each person at The Bluebonnet Social Club. Additionally, commemorative Bluebonnet Social Club boxes that include twelve different pieces of chocolate will be available for purchase.
