Brazosport Regional Health System Helps Blood Shortage
By Hosting Blood Drives
Severe weather across the United States is causing a decrease in blood supply therefore the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is helping other blood centers to meet their areas’ patient needs. To assist the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center with blood donations, the volunteers at Brazosport Regional Health System host frequent blood drives.
Statistics state that every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood resulting in the need of more than 38,000 blood donations daily. Because of the destructive winter storm impacting the country, the ongoing winter blast continually affects the amount of expected blood to be donated.
There are 13 million units of blood transfused every year in the U.S. and the average patient who receives a transfusion uses 4 units of blood. It’s estimated that 85% of us will need a transfusion by the time we reach age 75. With that said, donating blood to insure there is enough in supply; the life we save may be our own.
The Brazosport Regional Volunteers upcoming Blood Drive will be held on Thursday, February 17 from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM in the classrooms at Brazosport Regional. The dates for the remainder of the year are April 1, June 3, August 5, October 7 and December 2. Participating in the blood drive can save the next three lives!
