Lake Jackson, TX – November 9, 2007 – Perioperative Services at Brazosport Regional Health System (BRHS) awarded four Brazoswood students with a $500 scholarship. Over the summer, students volunteered over 200 hours of there time to perioperative services and the Dow Women’s Center.

Gale Brooks, Director of Perioperative Services initiated and implemented a summer volunteer program for the students in the Health Science Technology Education Program at Brazoswood High School. Brooks first started the program in 2006, where students were able to apply for a scholarship for $500 after completing a required 192 hours of volunteer work. “One goal of offering this opportunity is to give young students the chance to experience the health care environment in hopes that after finishing school they will give back to the community and work at the health system,” stated Brooks.

To qualify for the volunteer program at BRHS, students had to complete the Health Science Technology Education II Course offered at the high school. In addition, students need to have an understanding of patient confidentiality, patient and staff safety, infection control, and entry level skills. Entry level skills included checking vital signs, correctly positioning patients in bed, and bed making.

Four students were carefully selected to participate in the 2007 summer program. Two students choose to stay in perioperative services and the others went to the Women’s Center. “The students were only required to complete 192 volunteer hours to be eligible to apply for the scholarship, but most of them came to work everyday,” stated Brooks. “The volunteers were remarkable and extremely dedicated throughout the whole summer.” The Health Science Technology Student Volunteers did everything from helping in the recovery room to assisting with putting up surgical instruments. Volunteers in the Women’s Center acted as if they were a nurse’s aid, which included sterilizing utensils, helping with showers, and observing deliveries.

To be eligible to receive the scholarship, each participant submitted an essay discussing the reasons for choosing to be part of the medical profession and what this summer opportunity has meant to them. “It is here where I met many new friends and faces, and I am sad to leave,” an applicant wrote. “The amazing staff has inspired me, for this opportunity has allowed for many others to open.” The scholarship winners were recognized on October 30, where each volunteer was awarded $500. The program was a tremendous success for the students and nurses. In fact, David White, Director of ICU/Telemetry at BRHS wants to be involved with the program next summer.
