Brazosport Regional Health System Starts
New Breast Cancer Support Group
Brazosport Regional Health System (BRHS) in collaboration with The Mermaid Project is adding a new breast cancer support group. The goal of the support group is to provide women coping with breast cancer the opportunity to come together as a group and share common experiences, provide emotional support and promote education.
In 2003, the West of the Brazos Women’s Golf Auxiliary chose to honor the memory of a team member lost to breast cancer by making the founding gift to what is now known as The Mermaid Project. The Mermaid Project, funded by donations to the Brazosport Health Foundation, is a local initiative dedicated to transforming potential breast cancer victims into survivors. The Project provides free breast cancer screening, diagnostic procedures and treatment to low-income and uninsured women living in southern Brazoria County as well as funding for support groups and educational events.
BRHS is the primary partner in delivering screening and diagnostic services for The Mermaid Project. Brazosport Regional’s approved mammography service performs both screening and diagnostic mammography procedures in an attractive, female friendly environment. Another significant partner of The Mermaid Project is the Brazosport Regional Cancer Center. The center is a full service multidisciplinary cancer center providing top quality radiation and chemotherapy services to the citizens in the community. Mark D. Bonnen, MD is a radiation oncologist at the center and serves as the Medical Director for The Mermaid Project.
As the only program of its kind in Brazoria County, The Mermaid Project has been extremely successful with over 300 women benefiting from the program. Now, Monica Razo, RN, Mermaid Project Coordinator, will facilitate the new breast cancer support group and aid women in our community in a different way. The free of charge support group will allow women to express their feelings to other women with similar experiences.
The first breast cancer support group meeting will be held Thursday, September 27 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at BRHS, 100 Medical Drive in Lake Jackson on the 2nd floor in the Women’s Center Conference Room. For more information about the support group, please call Monica Razo at 979-297-3733.
