Nearly 1.4 million Americans were diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and according to the Texas Department of Health Services, approximately 1,166 new cases of cancer arose in Brazoria County. As the only comprehensive cancer facility in Brazoria County, Brazosport Regional Cancer Center, a center of excellence at Brazosport Regional Health System, will expand their services and their technological capabilities.

Officials broke ground on March 7, 2008 to start the expansion and renovation of the Cancer Center. “The expansion will enable our Cancer Center to meet the needs of the patients we serve for the foreseeable future.” stated Daniel Buche, CEO and President of Brazosport Regional. “Through the latest technology and educational programs, we want to offer peace of mind and hope to the citizens in the area; BRHS is dedicated to serving our community by providing a vast array of high quality healthcare services.”

Included in the expansion project is the purchase of the Elekta Synergy® system. The world’s first radiation treatment system with an integrated 3D imaging system that will enable clinicians to obtain CT images of patients just prior to treatment. The sophisticated Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) treatment approach guides radiation delivery precisely to the tumor while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The result is unmatched clinical confidence. The expansion is a multiphase renovation and expansion process, which will consist of a/an:
  • New state of the art Elekta Synergy® linear accelerator and second linear accelerator vault
  • Expanded chemotherapy treatment area
  • Additional exam/consultation rooms
  • Larger, updated conference room, that can serve as an education center for medical staff, patients, and volunteers
  • Larger modern waiting room
Brazosport Regional Cancer Center is dedicated to establishing the standard of care for the treatment of cancer. “The expansion will significantly increase the radiation capabilities we offer,” stated Mark Bonnen, M.D., Radiation Oncologist. “We will now be able to offer radiation therapy procedures that only a select few other centers throughout the State of Texas can provide.” The Brazosport Regional Cancer Center is a full service multidisciplinary cancer center providing comprehensive radiation and chemotherapy services to the community, enabling patients to avoid a lengthy drive to receive the care they need. The Cancer Center provides the latest technology and board-certified physicians to help you fight the battle of cancer.

The Brazosport Health Foundation is currently accepting donations for the Cancer Center expansion project and an initial contribution of $50,000 was made by the Rotary Club of Brazosport. In addition, the Foundation is proud to announce the formation of The Bluebonnet Social Club, a new social event created to raise funds and awareness for high-quality healthcare. The expansion of Brazosport Regional Cancer Center will be the first project to benefit from the group’s fundraising efforts.
