Chemistry

The Chemistry department provides extensive testing to assist the physician with the diagnosis and monitoring of a variety of conditions or disease states. Testing includes Basic and Comprehensive Metabolic Profiles, Liver function and Lipid profiles. A variety of tests are offered on urines, both random and 24 hour. Therapeutic drug monitoring is available for a variety of tests as well as a STAT drugs of abuse panel.
  • Basic Metabolic Profile (BMP) - This profile consists of several tests, it measures blood sugar (glucose) which your body uses for energy. Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate) keep your body’s fluids in balance. Blood urea nitrogen, creatinine and calcium are also included in this panel. This panel may be ordered as part of a regular health examination, to help diagnose a medical condition or to see if your kidneys are functioning properly.
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Profile (CMP) - This profile includes all of the tests in a BMP as well as the following: albumin, total protein, aspartate amino transferase (SGOT), alanine amino transferase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin. The CMP is an excellent panel to evaluate organ function and check for conditions such as diabetes, liver disease and kidney disease.
  • Lipid Profile - The lipid profile includes cholesterol, high density lipoproteins, triglycerides and calculated low density lipoprotein. This profile is often ordered to assess risk of coronary heart disease; they can help the doctor determine if someone is likely to suffer from a heart attack or stroke caused by blockage or blood vessels.
  • Live Profile - This profile includes seven different tests to diagnose, evaluate and monitor liver disease or liver damage.
  • Renal Profile - Acute and chronic renal failure can be diagnosed with this profile. It consists of a BMP, phosphate and albumin.
  • Hemoglobin A1C - This test is useful for the physician to assess a patient’s blood glucose control over a period of time.
