Community Education at BRHS Features Program on
Assessing Your Risk of Developing Diabetes
Lake Jackson, TX – November 5, 2007 – Deby Crook, RNC, MSN, FNP-C at Brazosport Regional Health System (BRHS) will be speaking about diabetes in Novembers community education program. American Diabetes Association reported that diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the United States.
Diabetes is a chronic health condition where the body is unable to produce insulin and properly break down sugar (glucose) in the blood. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that is needed to break down sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes is still unknown; however, obesity can lead to type 2 diabetes.
Crook will structure her presentation around key topics including: diabetes incidence in US, types of diabetes, risk factors that increase risk of developing diabetes, and what you can do to try and prevent the development of diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States who has diabetes. Unfortunately, there is an estimated 6.2 million people who are unaware that they have the disease. Knowing risk factors and preventive tips will help you fight the disease.
The community education program will be on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 from 6:00pm – 7:00pm at the Brazosport College Community Center, 120 Circle Way, Ste 2A, room 114, (next to the Sonshine Bookstore). Please RSVP to 979-285-1824, space is limited.
