The Dow Chemical Company Foundation recently announced a $313,880 donation to Brazosport Health Foundation to be utilized for the last phase of the Surgical Services renovation project at Brazosport Regional. This generous contribution will enable Brazosport Regional to continue to improve core facilities in the Surgical Services area and further enhance Brazosport Regional’s ability to provide exceptional surgical care. Brazosport Regional has been recognized nationally for receiving several surgical related awards from HealthGrades, including being ranked in the Top 10% in the Nation for Joint Replacement in 2010.

The last phase of the Surgical Services renovation project, which is slated to begin in early 2011, involves the renovation of the post-anesthesia recovery unity (PACU), a newly designed nurse’s station, perioperative surgery education office, a sub sterile room, and a fifth operating room. The PACU renovation will create a total of 12 beds, 2 of which will be cardiac specific.

”Keeping our building ‘state of the art’ is one of the keys to fulfilling our vision to be one of the premier community based healthcare service organizations in the nation,” remarked Daniel Buche, CEO/President of Brazosport Regional. “Through the support of local business partners, like The Dow Chemical Company, we are able to continually provide enhanced healthcare services for the communities we serve.”

The Dow Chemical Company and Brazosport Regional have been community partners for nearly 70 years. Shortly after the Dow Magnesium Hospital was built in 1947, Dow donated the hospital to the community and it became The Community Hospital of Brazosport, remaining in Freeport for the next 20 years. In the 1980’s, officials felt the hospital would be able to better serve the Brazosport area if it were located in Lake Jackson, so Dow generously donated $5.5 million and 25 acres for the construction of a new facility.

Dow’s partnership has continued to be vital in the development of services at Brazosport Regional. During the hospital expansion project in 2006, Brazosport Regional opened The Dow Women’s Center, a state of the art labor and delivery unit that welcomes nearly 900 new babies a year. And in 2008, Dow Chemical was also a major contributor in the initial stages of Surgical Services renovation project, which included the creation of the Cardiovascular Operating Suite and the only Cardiac Care Center in Brazoria County. The new Cardiac Center greatly expanded the type of life-saving procedures available locally. As a non-profit organization that does not receive any tax subsidies and that provides healthcare regardless of the individual’s ability to pay, Brazosport Regional relies on the generous support of community partners like The Dow Chemical Company to fulfill their mission of providing Healthcare with Excellence and Compassion.

“We are proud to give back to the community by enhancing local healthcare services for southern Brazoria County,” stated Gary Hockstra, Vice President of Dow Texas Operations. “The long-term viability of Brazosport Regional is critical to our community. We are pleased to support Brazosport Regional Health System in improving its core facilities.”
