Brazosport Health Foundation, a division of Brazosport Regional Health System, raised $30,000 for their nursing scholarship fund. The scholarship program is named in honor of Adelaide Thorpe, a community member who has volunteered at Brazosport Regional for nearly 50 years.

Established in 2007, the scholarship assists in removing financial barriers for those interested in pursuing a nursing career. The full scholarship is earmarked for nursing students at Brazosport College and helps with tuition, books and living expenses. Past recipients include Rhonda Sexton and Teresa Rooks.

The fundraiser was hosted by George and Trish Franklin and sponsored by First State Bank of Clute. The focus of the night was to raise enough money to enable the Health Foundation to sponsor two nursing scholarships a year. “Together, we are partnering to ensure that nurses are prepared to deliver patient-centered, high-quality care right here in our community,” said Judith Pepper, Executive Director at Brazosport Health Foundation.

The $30,000 raised was made possible by: Texas Dow Employee Credit Union ($10,000), First State Bank ($5,000), Brazosport Regional ($5,000) and other donations totaling $10,000.

Community members around town gathered to honor Mrs. Thorpe and her years of dedication to the hospital as a volunteer, generous donor and long-time friend. Attendees wore purple dresses, ties and pants to commemorate Mrs. Thorpe’s favorite color. As one of the very first pink ladies in the all-lady group of volunteers, Mrs. Thorpe has also been a member of the Health System’s Board of Directors, Institutional Review Board and now an active board member of the Foundation.

The highlight of the event was dedicating a street within the hospital campus to Mrs. Thorpe. Now named Thorpe Drive, the street runs between Medical and Emergency Drive, alongside the Women’s Center entrance. “There is never a doubt where her heart is and as a great supporter of the hospital, we are honored to dedicate a street on our campus to Mrs. Thorpe,” said Daniel Buche, CEO/President of Brazosport Regional.

The Foundation’s ambitious goal for the Scholarship Fund is set at $50,000. Every donation makes a difference, regardless of size. To donate, please visit www.Brazosport-Health-Foundation.org or call the Foundation office at 979-297-6190.
