Brazosport Health Foundation Announces Funds Raised for
Fashion Fantasy: Passport to Paris

Brazosport Health Foundation announced today that they were able to raise over $20,000 at Fashion Fantasy: Passport to Paris, an event to raise funds for The Mermaid Project, a program that provides free breast education and breast healthcare to medically underserved men and women in Southern Brazoria County.

Close to 400 community members packed the Lake Jackson Civic Center on Friday, April 8 for an unforgettable evening of fun, fashion and most importantly, breast education. The night started with live music from a local accordionist and mouth-watering hors d’oeuvres and signature drinks by Café Annice. Midway through the night, Keynote Speaker Crystal-Brown Tatum, stole the show as she described her experience as a young black woman with breast cancer and expressed the importance of annual breast exams.

Later that evening, the house rocked as both community men and women took the stage at the one-of-kind fashion show. The ladies proudly represented Doncaster apparel and the men strutted down the runway wearing clothes from Academy and Dillard’s. A few surprises on the runway had the house filled with tears of laughter!

The participation at the event underscores the commitment the community shares towards increasing breast cancer awareness and prevention. Major sponsors included BASF, TDECU, Drs. Falcon and Pant, and ConocoPhillips. To the date, The Mermaid Project has served over 1,300 individual clients, provided over 6,000 services, and has dedicated over $1 million in prevention, detection and treatment services for men and women who would not otherwise be afforded the care. As the only program of its kind in Southern Brazoria County, The Mermaid Project is funded through community gifts, fundraisers like Fashion Fantasy and is also made possible through the continued financial support from Susan G. Komen.

If you know anyone who might need services from The Mermaid Project, please contact Elva Ramirez, Project Navigator, at 979-297-3733. As a patient navigator, she can help clients through the maze of the medical system in a culturally relevant and compassionate way. Her training as a registered nurse allows her to provide quality breast health services to the community.
