Gastroenterologist at Brazosport Regional
Featured in National Journal

Dr. Nizam Meah, Gastroenterologist at the GI Center and at Brazosport Regional Health System, was recently featured in a national journal regarding the administration of the drug, propofol, for gastrointestinal (GI) procedures. The event of administering propofol changes the face of drug administration and will ultimately increase patient satisfaction.

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration, propofol is a short-acting, intravenously sedative agent that is far superior when compared to alternative sedation agents. It works fast and wears off considerable faster; with most patients experiencing very little side affects as opposed to more traditional drugs which can leave a person groggy for hours after a colonoscopy.

The study of the drug propofol and its usage during GI procedures was performed at multiple medical sites and different countries including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. Over 600,000 GI procedures were performed using propofol and the low rate of serious adverse events underscores the safety of using this particular sedative agent.

Dr. Meah was featured in the October 2009 and December 2009 of the National Gastroenterology Journal for his independent study of efficiency and safety of nurse-administered propofol as an adjunctive agent of conscious sedation in private non-academic gastroenterology practice setting.

“Propofol is a very promising substance that provides remarkable advantages over general sedation,” Dr. Meah stated. “This national study is reflective of our top-class medical care and couldn’t have been done without fellow colleagues, employers, and our patients.”

Overall, this new dimension results in fewer complications, improved comfort and less pain for the patients. “We are participating at a national level,” remarked Dr. Meah. “Our expertise in this small community highlights the level of quality care that our medical providers deliver.”
