Recently, a group of 28 women boarded the Royal Caribbean Voyager in Galveston to raise money for local breast healthcare. The group came together to raise funds and awareness for The Mermaid Project, a program that provides free breast education and breast healthcare to medically underserved men and women in Southern Brazoria County.
Valerie Van Epps of Four Seasons Travel graciously organized the cruise along with the Cruise Directors, Linda Huskey and Camie Johnson. The one week getaway raised $1,500 for Brazosport Health Foundation to be earmarked for The Mermaid Project. While on the cruise, participants were entertained with pink door signs, hats, and charm bracelets to raise awareness for The Mermaid Project.
Each night, the ladies had door prizes to raffle off and auction items to bid on. Local contributors include:
- Maria Atkins, Forever Treasures
- Ann’s Monograming
- Anderson Shoe and Saddle
- S and R Enterprises
- Sherrye Hatach, Lena Jarvie, Peggy Robinson, Carolyn Simmons, Camie Johnson, Linda Huskey, Pat Olmsted, Martha Elms, Ann Upchurch, Linda Marn, Linda Gonzales and many others.
With 28 women on the cruise, many memories were made all while benefitting a good cause. All monies raised from the cruise stays in the community to help men and women in our community affected by breast cancer. The Mermaid Project has served over 1,300 individual clients, provided over 6,000 services, and has provided over $1 million in prevention, detection and treatment services for men and women who would not otherwise be able to afford care.
Women from across Texas and even Hawaii contributed to the success of this cruise. Without the help of the following, the cruise wouldn’t have been so profitable:
- Camie Johnson, Linda Huskey, Valerie Collier, Jill baker, Sherrye Hatch, Jeanie Hicks, Pat Shaw, Kathy Fisher, Peggy Robinson, Mary Jean Adams, Nan Hornbeck, Christine Makin, Ann Upchurch, Linda Marn, Jane Witt, Karen Bowman, Duane Koch, Janet Koch, Frances Tyler, Pat Sury, Linda Gonzales, Cynthia Ward, Jo Ann Forse, Susan Briggs, Sandra Antill, Pam Rieschick, Lena Jarvie, and Patti Hazelrigg.
“We greatly appreciate their contributions to The Mermaid Project,” remarked Judith Pepper, Executive Director at Brazosport Health Foundation. “We count on philanthropic support from our community and we are grateful this group of women chose to focus on funding for local breast healthcare while on their vacation cruise!”
