Worldwide, 140-250 million cases of Lymphedema are estimated to exist. Lymphedema is the swelling of soft tissues of the body in result of fluid build up, usually affecting the arm and leg but can occur in the head, neck, abdomen, and genitalia. There are two different types of lymphedema:
  1. Primary lymphedema is the first kind of lymphedema and can occur because a person is born with lymph vessels and lymph nodes, but may not be working correctly. The condition can be present in childhood, puberty, or in adulthood and usually first affects your foot or calf.
  2. Secondary lymphedema happens when there is blockage or injury to the lymphatic vessels. This condition is more common than the first type and can often occur after surgery, radiation treatment, trauma, and cancer.
Symptoms of lymphedema include:
  • Increase swelling
  • Less flexibility resulting in decreased mobility
  • Dryness and redness of the skin
  • Difficulty fitting in clothes or tightness of jewelry
At Brazosport Regional Health System, our Lymphedema Therapist will customize a plan for each patient. Depending on the severity of your lymphedema, there are multiple treatments options available. Our treatment options are combined decongestive therapy which includes:
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage
  • Bandaging
  • Compression
  • Skin Care
  • Diet
  • Exercise
Our center employs certified lymphedema therapists who are LANA Certified, a nationally reputable certification that ensures high-quality care. Our therapists are also specialized in Manual Lymph Drainage, otherwise known as the Vodder Technique, a massage technique to increase the drainage of the connective tissue.
