Brazosport Regional Health System Performs
1st Off-Pump Open Heart Procedure
Brazosport Regional Health System recently performed the first Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (OPCABG) surgery, an advanced form of cardiac surgery. Devinder Bhatia, MD, FACS, cardiovascular surgeon at Cardiovascular Associates of Lake Jackson, was the surgeon who performed the first OPCABG at the Cardiac Care Center at Brazosport Regional Health System. This Off-Pump Surgery was the fourth cardiac surgical procedure performed in the new heart center.
Off-pump coronary artery bypass graph is a less invasive approach compared to the conventional open heart surgery and is increasingly being used in elderly patients to minimize complications. The OPCABG is done without placing the patient on the heart-lung machine and permits surgery on multiple vessels within the heart using mechanical stabilization. People who benefit from the off-pump procedure include those who are over 70 years of age, have kidney or lung disease, or who are at risk for having a stroke.
Dr. Bhatia has recently joined Brazosport Regional’s highly-skilled team of physicians and is board certified in general thoracic and cardiovascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. With more than 11 years of experience in cardiac care, Dr. Bhatia has performed more than 9,000 cardiovascular procedures.
