Brazosport Regional Health System Named One of the Nation’s 100 Top Hospitals by Thomson Healthcare
Brazosport Regional Health System was named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Thomson Healthcare, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare.
The award recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, financial performance, and efficiency. This is the first time Brazosport Regional has been recognized with this honor.
The 2007 Thomson 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success study appears in the March 17 edition of Modern Healthcare magazine.
“This distinction is one of the greatest public acknowledgements a hospital can attain, and is a testimony to the hard work of the Board, Medical Staff, and Hospital toward achieving excellence across many dimensions of hospital operations,” stated Daniel Buche, CEO and President of Brazosport Regional. “We are constantly measuring, reviewing, and improving our services to guarantee the best healthcare possible for the communities we serve.”
The 15th edition of the Thomson 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success study uses a balanced scorecard approach and scores hospitals according to eight key organization-wide measures: risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, patient safety composite, average core measures scores, severity-adjusted average length of stay, expense per adjusted discharge, profit from operations, and cash-to-debt ratio. Using these rating criteria, BRHS was judged in the Top 100 among over 3,000 hospitals nationwide and in the top 20 of hospitals nationally of similar size.
“This honor is the healthcare equivalent to winning the Super Bowl,” remarks Jim Martin, President of the Board at Brazosport Regional. We, as an organization, have put many years of effort toward receiving this honor, and I feel 100% confident that my family will receive optimal healthcare when coming to Brazosport Regional.”
In 2006, Brazosport Regional was ranked as the top 5% in the Nation for General Surgery by HealthGrades, an annual analysis of more than 37 million Medicare patients discharged at nearly every hospital in the country. In 2007, they were recognized as a Five-Star Community Value Provider by Cleverley + Associates, a demonstration of the hospitals commitment to providing the highest quality, most cost-effective healthcare for the community. In addition, out of more than 390 eligible Texas hospitals, Brazosport Regional was one of only 63 that met the criteria to receive the Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Award of Excellence from TMF Health Quality Institute. Brazosport Regional continues to raise the bar for healthcare in the community.
“The health system has consistently received high esteems over the last few years, and we hope that this will eliminate the need to drive north to the Houston hospitals,” stated T.K. Bui, D.O., Chief of Medical Staff at Brazosport Regional. “The most significant part of this award, is that it measures the hospitals overall performance. More importantly, we as a team achieved this accomplishment.”
According to the study, the highest performance levels in patient safety were achieved by the 100 hospitals in the study that delivered the highest balanced performance across quality, efficiency, and financial stability. If all hospitals had performed at the level of these leading hospitals on the eight patient safety measures studied, they would have saved $253 million and 7,914 lives during the time period the study examined.
“Employers, health plans, and hospitals need to take note that we have entered a new phase in driving transformation of the healthcare industry,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president in the Center for Healthcare Improvement at Thomson Healthcare. “Hospitals setting new levels of patient safety are those with the highest balanced scores across quality, efficiency, and financial performance.”
